Alex Henwood


Alex started dancing at her family-owned dance school at the age of 3. She studied A Level Dance and gained a BA (Hons) in Dance Studies from Middlesex University in London.

After graduating in 2015, Alex joined Birmingham International Dance Festival as Programme Intern, working with the programming and artistic team to deliver the award-winning biannual festival.

Alex joined DanceXchange in 2016 and in 2019, Alex was promoted to Head of Learning and Participation; a senior leadership role, with a focus on talent development, cultural engagement strategies, and generating income.

She was part of the senior leadership team implementing the transition of DanceXchange to FABRIC (a strategic Midlands dance company formed from a merger of DanceXchange with Dance4).

Alex graduated from the University of Wolverhampton in 2021 with an MBA (Senior Leadership specialism) with Distinction; an MA Senior Leaders Apprenticeship (Arts and Culture); and a CMI Chartered Manager Qualification Level 7 in Strategic Management and Leadership.

As part of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, Alex was Senior Producing Lead (on behalf of FABRIC) for Critical Mass, the £1.3million inclusive dance participation project developed in collaboration with Birmingham 2022, FABRIC, Arts Connect and Dance Development Leaders Group (DDLG). Alex has co-developed a Playbook to ensure Critical Mass learnings continue to mobilise sector development and best practice.

Alex joined Anjali Dance Company in January 2023 as Director and is passionate about continuing to develop the company as an international leader in dance.
