Alex Henwood
Director

Alex began dancing at the age of 3 at her family-owned studio, the Audree Henwood School of Dance and Drama. She studied A Level Dance and gained a BA (Hons) in Dance Studies from Middlesex University in London.

After graduating, Alex joined Birmingham International Dance Festival and DanceXchange. She was later promoted to Head of Learning and Participation, a senior leadership role, creating and delivering the organisation’s outreach and engagement strategy. Alex was also part of the senior leadership team who led the transition of DanceXchange to FABRIC (a strategic Midlands dance company formed from a merger of DanceXchange with Dance4).

Alex graduated from the University of Wolverhampton in 2021 with an MBA (Senior Leadership specialism) with Distinction; an MA Senior Leaders Apprenticeship (Arts and Culture); and a CMI Chartered Manager Qualification Level 7 in Strategic Management and Leadership.

As part of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, Alex was Senior Producing Lead (on behalf of FABRIC) for Critical Mass, leading the £1.3million inclusive dance participation project developed in collaboration with Birmingham 2022, FABRIC, Arts Connect and Dance Development Leaders Group (DDLG). Alex co-developed a Playbook to ensure Critical Mass learnings continue to inform sector development and best practice.

Alex was previously a Trustee of The Play House (Birmingham) and currently serves as a Trustee of LEVEL Centre and a Non-Executive Director for ZoieLogic Dance Theatre. Alex is a Fellow of the RSA.

Since joining Anjali Dance Company as Director in January 2023, Alex has been passionate about championing artistic excellence and inclusion, shaping the company’s evolution as a global voice for disabled and non-disabled artists.
